Structural Steel Services

Twenty20 Engineering provides a professional, coded structural steel fabrication service, that utilises modern machinery and processes to accurately fabricate structural steel. Including laser and plasma cutting, band saws, drilling and punching machines.

What Structural Steel Services Do We Offer?

We take your project from design to fabrication by using Tekla Structures to create models and drawings to facilitate the production process as part of our Structural Steel Detailing Service. We ensure a smooth process from start to finish when designing and fabricating secondary steel items such as:

  • Gantries
  • Mezzanine floors
  • Staircases and balustrades
  • Doorframes and bulkhead supports.
  • Lifting Beams

We are confident we can meet your structural steel work requirements.

We are able to work to standards such as BS EN 1090 CE Marking and BS EN 1090 Execution Class 3, and will provide all materials certification and NDT testing to suit project requirements.

What is Twenty20 Engineering’s process for fabricating structural steel?

In structural steel fabrication raw steel material goes through a series of stages which transform it into designed components ready to be installed into construction projects. This method generally includes the following stages:

  1. Design and preparation: Twenty20 Engineering starts this process by understanding the project scope and developing a detailed design. Twenty20 Engineering develops 2D Drawings and a 3D CAD model of the structure which defines the dimensions, and connection details between each component keeping in mind the structural properties of the material. We use Tekla Structures for all of our structural steel fabrication projects
  2. Material selection: Based on the customer requirements Twenty20 Engineering carries out a detailed project analysis to select appropriate materials. Generally, structural steel is made from carbon steel as it provides durability and strength.
  3. Cutting and shaping: Once the developed design meets the customer’s requirements the materials are purchased. By using various cutting methods the steel sections are cut into the required size. Twenty20 Engineering provides a wide range of cutting methodologies such as; sawing, shearing, plasma cutting, flame cutting and CNC cutting techniques for precise cuts.
  4. Machining and Drilling: Depending on the requirements of the project, the steel sections will now go through machining processes to create slots, holes or similar features. Milling, drilling and punching machines are used to create the desired features.
  5. Welding and Assembly: Twenty20 Engineering recognises that welding is a crucial stage in structural steel fabrication, hence Twenty20 provides a wide range of welding techniques to suit each specific project. The techniques used within the company are arc welding or gas metal welding (MIG). Twenty20 ensures the welding is performed by trained coded welders, who assure the connections are strong and meet structural standards. Based on the project requirements other assembly methods might be adopted such as bolting and riveting.
  6. Surface treatment: To improve structural properties such as durability, corrosion resistance, and appearance the steel components are taken through a surface treatment process such as sandblasting, shot blasting or galvanising. Other types of surface treatment include primers and paint systems which can be applied to prevent corrosion and rust, depending on the environment.
  7. Quality control: This is a procedure used within the company to ensure the manufactured steel components adhere to the project requirements, to ensure a smooth transportation and erection process. At this stage, we will also undertake Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) of the welds to ensure that they meet the required standards.
  8. Transport: when the product is ready to be delivered, the steel components are carefully loaded to ensure integrity and safety to transport them to their designated construction site. Based on the construction plans the components are erected and installed.

By using this process for all of our projects we are confident your project can be efficiently delivered.

Where is structural steel used?

Structural steel is used in different industries but mainly within construction projects. Here are some examples of industries to which Twenty20 provides its services:

  • Building and Construction: Structural steel tends to be a popular choice within the construction sector for various types of buildings such as commercial complexes, high-rise buildings, warehouses, industrial facilities, stadiums, and bridges. As it provides strength, durability and flexibility. Which makes it suitable to support heavy loads as well as resisting environmental forces.
  • Infrastructure Projects: The high strength-to-weight characteristic of steel allows longer spans to reduce the excessive support columns needed and increase the efficiency of infrastructure projects including the construction of bridges, tunnels, railways, airports and marine structures.
  • Industrial plants: steel fabrication is currently extensively used in the construction of industrial plants such as manufacturing facilities, refineries, oil and gas installations and power plants. Structural steel provides a strong framework for containing heavy machinery, equipment, and piping systems.
  • Agriculture and food processing: The agricultural industry uses steel to construct agricultural buildings, storage facilities, silos, and food processing plants. It provides the required strength to support farming equipment, storage of farming products, and processing machinery.
  • Retail and commercial warehouses: Steel is used in the construction of retail complexes, office buildings, and shopping malls, as steel frames provide open floors which allow flexibility in space arrangements, and can support large windows.
  • Renewable energy projects: Steel fabrication is now widely used within renewable energy projects to create the framework for mounting and supporting the equipment in projects such as; wind turbines, solar farms, and biomass power plants.

The adaptability of structural steel makes it the perfect selection for construction projects, as it offers durability, design flexibility and cost-effective solutions.
