THE BRIEF
The client enlisted Twenty20 Engineering to design and produce the fabrication pack for custom balustrading at a residential property in London.
The client had specific requirements for the balustrading as detailed in their specifications, including hidden fixings wherever feasible. Any exposed fasteners must be evenly spaced and centrally aligned for a clean aesthetic. Also, tight tolerances were required for each tread and riser of the staircase to ensure safe and visually seamless construction.
CHALLENGE
Achieving a clean aesthetic with hidden fixings for the balustrade presented a unique challenge. To facilitate installation, the design called for fabrication in three sections. Detailed planning was essential to ensure seamless integration and concealment of all fasteners.
Another challenge was achieving precise tolerances for stair treads and risers to prevent unwanted gaps and hollows in the final staircase.
RESULT
To tackle tolerance issues, Twenty20 Engineering performed a thorough site survey of the staircase, guaranteeing precise measurements. Allowing us to confidently design the balustrading, ensuring it fits perfectly with minimal gaps during installation.
To achieve a clean, seamless look, we prioritised concealed fasteners. We selected shallow-depth countersunk screws to join the three balustrade sections from underneath the handrail. For any unavoidable exposed fixings, we opted for black screws that would visually blend in with the planned powder-coated finish.
