Large access platform

THE BRIEF

Twenty20 Engineering was contacted by a client in Missouri, USA, to design a 3-level access platform. The platform has been designed to provide secure and efficient access to large machinery within the manufacturing facility.

The client's primary considerations included:

  • The access platform was intended for use at a food manufacturing site, requiring stainless steel 304 to comply with food safety standards.
  • The platform needed to allow easy access to all parts of the machine.
  • The access platform needs to be bolted together to allow for shipping.
  • No single assembly should be longer than 5.5m to fit within a 20ft container.

CHALLENGE

The challenge for this project was to design a platform that could be flat-packed into a compact space, minimising the volume required for transportation and a reduction in transportation costs for shipments to the USA. It was imperative to guarantee that the platform fulfilled the client's expectations regarding accessibility. Elements of the machine required inspection and maintenance to ensure smooth operation, making this a key consideration in the platform design.

RESULT

To tackle these challenges, Twenty20 Engineering envisioned the installation process of the access platform on-site before proceeding with a detailed design. As part of this, they requested a CAD model of the machine from the client to coordinate the platform design with the client's design team, expediting the design process. Twenty20 Engineering delivered a comprehensive package of a 3D CAD model, fabrication pack, general arrangement, and installation drawings within four weeks.
