Industry: Construction and Structural Steel

Location: Bristol, UK

MBR Platform

THE BRIEF

The client approached Twenty20 Engineering to design and provide structural calculations for an MBR platform, enabling access and inspection of a concrete water storage tank. The platform needed to adhere to the following specifications:

  • Provide access to the top of the 4m tall storage tank, ensuring nobody could fall in. Ladder to provide access to the platform, including a safety gate at the top.
  • Be structurally sound for man loading, and fix the concrete tank structure at the rear of the platform.

CHALLENGE

The main challenge for this project was ensuring that the design met the required dimensional criteria while also considering the limitations imposed by the Hot Dip Galvanizing process. Specifically, the client requested a length of 8.2m for the design, but it was crucial to ensure that all components and assemblies did not exceed 5m long to fit within the Hot Dip Galvanizing tank.

Twenty20 Engineering had another important goal: to minimise fabrication costs for the client. The team aimed to incorporate as many "off-the-shelf" components as possible into the design.

RESULT

To address these challenges, Twenty20 Engineering incorporated FH Brundle components as frequently as possible in the design to minimise fabrication expenses.

The design was divided into two sections over the middle column, enabling each component to undergo Hot Dip Galvanization.

Twenty20 Engineering successfully provided a 3D CAD model, general arrangement, fabrication and installation drawings, and a structural report confirming the design's integrity and compliance with all regulations.
