Location: Bromborough, Wirral

Mezzanine Platform

THE BRIEF

The client aimed to modify an existing production line for a research project exploring a new production process for one of their glass fibre products.

Twenty20 Engineering received instructions to design a mezzanine platform that adhered to the following criteria:

  • Structurally sound design to withstand a floor loading of 5kN/m².
  •  Incorporate a lifting beam with a Safe Working Load (SWL) of 2500kg.
  • Side access to the platform via a stairway.
  • Compatibility with existing structures on the factory floor, including primary steel for the building and brick walls.

CHALLENGE

The challenge for this project was ensuring seamless integration of the new structure with the existing steel and brick structures. A site survey was needed, focusing on structural and dimensional aspects to ensure that the new steel design would seamlessly integrate with the existing structure, avoiding clashes and interference.

The design needed to address user access for two critical functions: operation of the furnace and safe manoeuvring (lifting, fitting, and removal) of the furnace within the supported structure.

Incorporating the furnace as part of the design work could accurately allow for its lifting and fitting with the new structure.

RESULT

Twenty20 Engineering successfully delivered the structural calculations and design package, including the engineering design, steel detailing, 3D CAD model, fabrication pack, installation drawings, and structural report for the new mezzanine platform.

Later in the year, during downtime on the production line, the client successfully installed the platform.
