Project value: £1300

Industry: Construction and Structural Steel

Location: Missouri USA

Small Access Platform

THE BRIEF

The client enlisted Twenty20 Engineering to design an access platform tailored to encase two storage vessels at their manufacturing facility located in Missouri, USA.

The client required access to the top of the storage vessels for maintenance and inspection.

Their primary considerations included:

  • The access platform used in a food manufacturing site required construction from stainless steel 304 to ensure compliance with food safety standards.
  • The platform was to fit tightly with two 1600mm diameter vessels 2300mm apart.
  • The access platform must be assembled using bolts to facilitate the shipping of GRP grating intended for the flooring.

CHALLENGE

This project presented three primary challenges. Firstly, we needed to ensure the design could be efficiently flat packed into a compact space, minimising volumetric requirements and reducing transportation costs to the USA.

The secondary challenge involved ensuring clear identification of welded assemblies and loose parts for ease of assembly on site. We addressed this by implementing laser part marking and providing a comprehensive build sequence.

The project's ultimate challenge lay in meeting the tight deadline for delivering the fabricated components to the client, which we successfully managed.

RESULT

To tackle these obstacles, Twenty20 Engineering strategised the on-site installation process for the access platform before finalising the detailed design. This approach enabled the design team to devise a solution that minimised space requirements within shipping containers for delivery to the USA. Subsequently, Twenty20 Engineering provided the client with a comprehensive package including a detailed design, 3D CAD model, general arrangement, fabrication pack, installation drawings and a build sequence. This entire process was completed within three weeks, ensuring a seamless start to the project.
